Spent some time with a few grognardy games over the weekend. Mmm, turn based (and hex based!) goodness...
-- Commander: Europe at War. This is a lot like Strategic Commander, a theater-level hex based WW2 game covering the whole ETO. It's a lot like Panzer General and Axis & Allies had a love child. It's a little on the beer-and-pretzel side, and I wouldn't mind if the hex map were about twice as large as it actually is. But it is fun, fairly clean and elegant. Really, I just can't get enough big WW2 games.
-- Sword of the Stars, with the new Born in Blood expansion. Old-school MOO1 style gaming, with some very cool ship design & combat systems. Warning: horrible interface. Strategic phase is turn-based, combat is real time with way not enough control over time speed, it seems. But some very cool stuff if you can get past the UI, not sure how much is in the vanilla game but with the expansion it seems like a lot of cool content.
